The Rainbows are coming… The Rainbows are coming!!!!

27 Jun

You asked for them…we ordered them and they are arriving Friday! These funky, fun, &  fabulous Rainbow Roses are arriving from Holland on Friday for all of you who have asked that we bring them back. They are unique and each rose has the colors of the rainbow. How could you go wrong sending these to someone special?

They use to be called Happy Roses, which certainly fits them and were originally created by a Dutch florist named Peter van der Werken.  He invented the process of  injecting dye into the rose stems as they are growing on  the plant. The process lets each petal get a separate color and this is not an easy process. The particular rose that is used is the Vendella as it is a bright white rose and seems to accept the dye well. Other dye combinations can be done, however black and white are impossible. Can you imagine what time it takes to do this to thousands of plants so brides, businesses and you get these fun roses.

This process is not like what we did in school where we used food coloring to see how the dye absorbed into the carnation…remember those days? That was easy….This is very different and has to be very precise as the measurement has to be exact or you can ruin the whole plants supply of rose blooms. When the bloom opens, you can see the effect of the floral engineering!

The colors really ‘pop’ out at you, don’t they?   Come by and take a look, let us know what you think….who knows, you might want to grab a few for yourself.

From Russia with Sunflowers

26 Jun

ImageSo today we received a gorgeous shipment of Sunflowers in from Ecuador and the staff started a conversation about “sunflower oil”…Funny, as a florist, I look at them as just being a bright and cheerful way to bring out a smile and fill a room full of joy.

So off we went to the internet, and wow, did we find some very cool info.

Did you know that Sunflowers were a home grown USA based plant? That they seeds were an integral part of the Native American diet?

That the earliest of Explorers took some seeds back to Europe and voila!, Sunflowers became popular. So popular that some of  the most famous Van Gogh paintings are of  Sunflowers?  He loved the vibrancy of the color and painted them from freshness to their wilting stages.

That it is the State flower of Kansas?

That they seeds were an integral part of the Native American diet? Today, you find them in every dugout at every baseball game across the country.

That the Russians saved the Sunflower partly because of religion. Yes, religion. It was not on the list of unacceptable foods that could be used during Lent. Bitter and lard were,  so the oil of the sunflower was acceptable. Gradually the oil production grew and now it is rated among the best oils to use.

Of course here in the USA, the land of no trans fat, companies that sold fried food snacks etc needed another source of oil…and yes, sunflower oil is indeed what is used in many potato chips processing. Now some of our farmers are growing the beautiful sunflower again for this golden good-for-you oil.

In our shop, our Sunflowers arrive from local farmers depending on the season or from Ecuador  and it is interesting to see the different shades that each country produces. Come in and see what we have this week! They are beautiful and the store is filled with sunshine!

Flowers From The Rainflorist Brings Back the Romance of the Rose

18 Nov

Walking into Flowers From The Rainflorist Shop is always a blissful trip down memory lane of when Roses smelled like…well, Roses! Today you can smell the regular beautiful roses we carry but most are not like grandma’s garden roses that we use to smell outside the window growing up. Not too strong, but rather a gentle, luscious exquisite fragrance, that when smelled later on as you grew up, always took you back to that moment.
.
Recently we started to import some of these “Grandma’s Roses” also known as Garden Roses or as the English call them ” English Cut” or the French say ” Romantica’s” that have an elegant fragrance that wafts throughout our shop. Now the shop smells like a “Real Rose Garden”….It makes you want to bury your nose into one for a long time….it makes you feel romantic…it makes you want to pin one in your hair, or place it on your desk or dance with it in your mouth to some sexy Latin beat, but for sure it makes you desire it…. the hardest decision is which one do you want to take home.

These magnificent beauties come from special farms in Holland and the Andes of South America and are an absolutely delightful indulgence to the senses. They are full petaled, rich in colors, hardy, and the fragrance really does not fade.

With names like Mythos, Toulouse Lautrec, Augusta Luise and my all time favorite ” Wanted”, these nostalgic roses conjur up all sorts of romantic escapades. With bold reds, chartreuse, apricots, light pinks, whites, yellows, intense pink and even a mix of lavender and pink combined we can certainly satisfy the most discerning “nose”.

For the Brides planning their wedding, these are the gorgeous roses you see in wedding magazines that make you desire them for your bouquet. And the size of the rose when it opens is astounding!

So stop in..sniffs are free!

The Beauty of Flowers

Sometimes when we look at flowers, even as Florist, we forget just how beautiful they are. Many have never seen how they develop once they have “become”.

Bosses Day

14 Oct

Bosses Day is October 16th and seems to come with a certain degree of contention.  Everyone one has had a difficult boss at some point or another, but in that light there exists that ever so rare “fun boss”. A boss that cares about your well being.  A boss that not only notices all the work you do for them but goes as far as rewarding you for that work. A boss that is less of a dictator and more of a mentor.  A boss that deserves some recognition.

The Irony is that Bosses Day was originally invented by an employee forgetting their bosses’ birthday.  To make up for their forgetfulness, the employee gave their boss a gift later and called it Bosses day.  So really, the inspiration of Bosses day came out of a forgetful employee making amends.  So whatever your relationship is with your boss, think of Bosses day as an opportunity to build a new, healthy relationship with your boss.  And who knows, it may have a positive effect on your career.

After all, here at Flowers from the Rainflorist we like to say, “it pays not to forget”.

Check out some of our Bosses Day arrangements!
